Experience the wonders of Finnish nature

The programme explores the sounds, flora and fauna of nature.

Finland has four unique seasons. A bright summer, when it's bright in Oulu even at night. Our region's birdlife and late summer berry reserves are second to none.

The colourful autumn brings migratory birds, dark nights and our clean nature is slowly turning into a mushroom hunter's paradise, before the frosty winter.

Winters in Oulu are crisp and full of snow. It's time for warm sweaters and windproof jackets. Winter is also a time of darkness, but also a time of peace and quiet in our forests.

Flowering spring is also a time for wild herbs. In spring and early summer, nature provides a bountiful harvest of wild edible plants for anyone to pick. Fresh and nutritious ingredients are easy to gather for salads, spices and herbal drinks.

Finland has the largest archipelago in the world, with more than 80 000 islands off its coast. Our destination is the island of Akyo, which is slowly becoming part of the mainland due to the strong land uplift in the region. The breeding birds in the area are abundant in both species and numbers, and the surrounding sea area is an important resting place for migratory birds.

Did you know that all people have the right to enjoy nature anywhere in the Finnish countryside, regardless of land ownership? "Everyone's rights" in Finland are a huge extension of freedom of movement, but they also bring with them serious responsibilities. Most important of all is respect for nature and people. The Golden Rule requires a desire to preserve and protect the pristine beauty and wonders of nature for the enjoyment of future generations.
